As you may have heard, the latest addition to the battlefield is Task Force 3 (TF-3). The new offensive formation is a semi-Division and is completely offensive in nature. TF-3 will, in time, become the proposed new 63 Division. This will become the 6th new Offensive Division the Army has raised in recent times. The exact strategical objectives given to TF-3 is yet unclear.
TF-3 currently has a troop strength of 5000 officers and men organized into 2 Brigades or 8 Units. It will require an additional Brigade (2,500 men) to transform into a full Division. The various units comprising TF-3 also includes an Administration and Logistics Units that perform everything from processing salaries, feeding the officers and men to transporting ammunition and casualties.
As we have explained in a previous post, the decision to organize Task Force-3 came after the Army Commander decided not to raise a 63 Division immediately. One Brigade, which was set to complete the formation of the proposed 63 Division was attached to 57 Division given its heavier workload. Task Force 1 was also expanded to a full Division with the addition of a 3rd Brigade.
The Army Commander has not only promoted but also handed over the reigns of the new Task Force to two of the youngest and most daring officers in the Sri Lanka Army today. Lt. Col. Subhashana Weikala, the young officer who led 4SR and the 57 Division into battle starting from Madhu, Uylankulam, Akkarayankulam to Kokavil has been appointed Commander of the 632 Brigade while Lt. Col. Priyantha Perera who outperformed many seniors inside the Mulaitivu Jungles has been appointed Commander of the 631 Brigade.
