A team of Commandos from the Special Task Force acting on Military Intelligence this morning ambushed a group of 15 Tigers at Kotiyagala (Situated near general area Siyambalanduwa) along the Ampara-Monaragala border killing 13 and injuring another two who subsequently escaped.
The team was part of a 75-member unit deployed under LTTE leaders “Colonel” Ram and Nagulan operating from the general area Kanjikudiaru.
Meanwhile the former “Special Commander” of the Chalres Anthony Brigade Gobith and the last known “Special Commander” of the same unit, Amuthab have been killed in fighting at Ananthapuram, a village on the A-35 road.
“Colonel” Gobith once headed the famed Charles Anthony Unit and “Lt. Colonel” Pallavan functioned as his Deputy Commander until Pallavan and a team of 200 Charles Anthony cadres were surrounded and routed by the Special Forces and the 57 Division. “Lt. Colonel” Amuthab, who Military Intelligence says was similar in appearance to a westerner then replaced Pallavan and subsequently Gobith until both of them were routed on the same day at Ananthapuram.
Tough days for LTTE ‘middle-management’ contd.
As reported by us earlier, the LTTE’s ‘middle management’ has suffered irreparable losses during the last few days of fighting. The identity of the dead tiger leaders are coming to light after a Military Intelligence team was sent to the coconut grove where they breathed their last breath.
So far they have identified the remains of Theepan, Nagesh, Vithusha, Thurga, Gadabi, Manivannan, Thamilenthi (Thamilselvan’s deputy and deputy political wing head) and host of others including Swarnam’s two deputies Chithrangan and Adithyan who fought against the 59 in the recent past.
The entire brood of tiger leaders got trapped after the Special Forces and Commandos bypassed their defenses and cut them off at the rear. The operation was launched by a combined 53, 58, and Task Force 8 team 3 days ago when they crept into LTTE areas like two rods on either flank. The two infiltrations joined-up at the rear of the LTTE defence right upto the NFZ and boxed-in the Tigers.
The three Divisions were unaware of a grand plan by the LTTE to break into the Army FDL, which coincidentally was to be launched on the same day. The three Divisions made a smart move when, instead of clearing the box from south to north, started from north to south. It was then that they realized that over 600 LTTE are trapped inside the area and that they had even moved heavy artillery including 130mm into the narrow patch of coconut trees.
As the resistance was high, the three Divisions called in the Special Forces and 2 Commandos who took over the clearing operation and searched and destroyed all LTTE units. By last evening, the operations was completed and the total bodycount stood at 421 LTTE cadres killed. What happened to a large group of others cannot be revealed now.
The Army has also planned a daring rescue operation into the NFZ, which will commence within the next two days, sources confirmed to DefenceWire. The nature of the operation, we have been told, is unlike anything any military has launched to date.
Fat Lady Clears her throat – PTK Liberated and LTTE suffers irreversible losses!
As reported earlier by EFT, the 58th and Task Force 8 (attached to the 53rd) boxed in the remnants of the LTTE’s PTK fighting force north east of PTK, by last evening the vast majority of these trapped cadres were annhilated by the SLA. Over 420 bodies were collected during clearing operations (the official count stands at 250). The cadres were hunted down only after offering them a chance to surrender – about 70 did surrender, the scenes of surrender are reminiscent of Iraqi soldiers surrendering to the coalition forces in the 1991 Gulf War.
The LTTE were not able to send in a rescue force to get these trapped cadres out as the SF had infiltrated the borders of the NFZ (as reported earlier by EFT). The SF were able to neutralize attempted LTTE incursions from the NFZ into the boxed in area.
The SLAF ably supported the SLA during this annhilation mission and used their recently acquired arsenal of laser guided A2S missiles to strike at identified targets with pin point accuracy, as has been reported by other sources – self styled “Colonel” Vidusha (commander of the Malathi brigade), “Colonel” Theepan and Nagesh, Duruga, Gadaffi (high rankers) along with other middle rung leaders have reportedly died in these air strikes.
The bodies of Theepan, Duruga and Vidusha’s are said to be among the recovered corpses, an MI team from Colombo is on their way to the scene to establish the identity of the dead leaders.
Civilian exodus expected any minute now
With the trapping of the LTTE in the NFZ, the civilians are getting ready to abandon the NFZ and flee into cleared areas. Within the next 48 hours, the exodus is set to start (some say it has already started). LRRP is conducting limited operations inside the NFZ, but due to the sensitive nature of these operations, we will not reveal details. A UNHCR delegation is already in Sri Lanka , their mission is to observe the civilian exodus and ensure their welfare needs are met. If the LTTE holds the civilians any longer, they are making it worse for themselves as it would give the SLA more time to annhilate the remaining cadres, if they flee along with the civilians, they will be picked up and sent to rehabilitation.
A number of SLA infantrymen and SF soldiers have laid down their lives in the past few days of fighting, we would ask our readers to pay tribute to these fallen bravehearts.
Fat Lady warms up her voice – Less resistance from LTTE
Since the large scale elimination of LTTE fighting cadre in the last 48 hrs, the resistance to civilians trying to escape to the GOSL controlled areas has reduced significantly. This is not because there aren’t sufficient armed LTTE members in the NFZ to restrict civilians escape, but there isn’t anyone to give orders; to tell them what to do. This will not only encourage large numbers of civilians to cross over, but will cause low level armed cadres to desert their ranks and surrender. The SLA is clearing escape routes so larger numbers of civilians would be encouraged to make the move.
Though most of the heavy artillery guns and other weapons are now captured or put out of action, a serious point taken in to consideration by the SLDF is the massive stocks of arti-shells, munitions and other explosives which are stockpiled in the NFZ. These could be triggered off by the losing LTTE to create indiscriminate carnage. Therefore the SLDF are on high alert with SF (Special Forces) in position waiting to storm the NFZ when orders are given.
The morale of SLDF, particularly the SLA Infantry, is at an all time high having witnessed so many LTTE hard-core and long standing terrorist leaders on the KIA list. Vidusha & Deepam have been a thorn-in-the side of the advancing forces, but now they have truly met their Maker (we are sure the Maker is not impressed by them). Eye-witnessing the dead bodies of terrorist leaders “Live” (as opposed to hear of their demise over LTTE communication), is the icing on the cake to battle fatigued men on the front lines. This has given them an unprecedented morale boost (not that they needed one. . .) and spurred them on to fight with more vigour and vehemence.
Rumours are rife that Piripaharan is “brown bread”, but these rumours are just that, rumours. There is no truth in them. He is in civvies and probably on a crash diet in the hope of attaining the same appearance as one of the people he claims to represent. This way he hopes to mingle with the civilians to try and escape!
LTTE air wing leader Rathnam Master killed; Swarnam’s leg amputated.Charles Anthony to be sent to Malaysia for treatment
Rathnam Master, the head of LTTE’s air wing and the Radha Brigade is the latest addition to the list of names of the LTTE leaders killed in the battles raged for three days in Puthukudirippu, say the civilians that have fled the no-fire zone. According to them, he has been killed by an aerial attack of the Air Force.
Army spokesman Brigadier Udaya nanayakkara said that LTTE senior cadre Swarnam was also injured and one of his legs was amputated. Swarnam was injured in the attack in which Prabakaran’s son Charles Anthony sustained injuries.
Civilians that came from no-fire zone said that preparations were underway to shift injured Charles Anthony to Malaysia for treatment. Army spokesman refused to comment on the reports.
Army sources said that Puthukudirippu was dead silent following the defeat of the battle and the fleeing away of the LTTE cadres. They were hidden in the no-fire zone and maintained a very low profile. Meanwhile, the number of civilians fleeing from the no-fire zone has increased, sources said.
