A disabled Constable attached to the Weligama Police Station succeeded in saving the life of a 28-year-old mother of one who had attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the Polathumodera Ganga from the Denipitiya bridge.
The woman, a resident of Udukawa in Weligama had decided to commit suicide after a family quarrel. When she jumped into the river, although there had been a large crowd present, no one had tried to save her as the river at that point position is believed to be infested with crocodiles.
However Police Constable Anura (27683), who happened to be close by, having seen the woman jump into the river jumped in after her and succeeded in saving her. She is presently undergoing treatment at the Weligama Hospital.
H. M. Anura (37), a resident of Ihala Kumbura, Kottawagama of Galle, had joined the Police Special Task Force in 1992 and had served in Ampara and Batticaloa before he was shot and injured in action. He had been undergoing treatment for the last six months.
It seems the man is a regular superman as he had previously saved a pregnant woman during the tsunami catastrophe.
